Fling Together and Shot of Scotch NYC are teaming up once more to sprinkle some Highland Dancing magic on the lively streets of NYC for Tartan Week 2025!

Dancers aged 13 years* and over from anywhere in the world are welcome to apply. FTDT members will have priority to spots in Squad 1, however, as a part of our collaboration with Shot of Scotch, we will be accepting applications and filling spots with premier level dancers from outside the FTDT community who meet Squad 1 criteria. Squad 2 requires less of a time commitment than Squad 1, and dancers of all levels are invited to apply. Details below.

*dancers aged 13-17 must be accompanied by an adult.

Dancers may apply for either Squad 1 or Squad 2. If a dancer applies for Squad 1, and is not selected, they will also be considered for a spot on Squad 2/Squad 1 Reserve.

Squad 1 Applications Open Dec. 18 - Jan 31; team announcement Feb. 10

Squad 2 Applications Open Dec. 18 - March 1; rolling team announcement starting Feb.10 - March 14

Event Overview:

​

Location: New York City, NY

Dates: April 4-6, 2025 (time commitment varies for Squads 1 & 2)

Travel & Accommodation: Dancers will be responsible for covering all travel related costs, including flights, accommodation, and meals. Fling Together will try to find affordable group accommodation for dancers who are interested, but dancers will be responsible for covering this cost.

Schedule:

 

  1. In-Person Rehearsal (Squad 1): Friday, April 4; Time (AM) and Location TBC

  2. In-Person Rehearsal (Squad 2): Friday, April 4; Time (PM) and Location TBC

  3. Pop-Up Performances (Squad 1): Friday, April 4; Time (PM) and Location TBC

  4. ASF's Concert at Bryant Park (Squads 1 & 2): Saturday, April 5 @ Time TBC (before the parade); Fountain Terrace at Bryant Park

  5. NYC Tartan Day Parade (Squads 1 & 2): Saturday, April 5, 2025 @ 2pm; Parade start W 44th St & 6th Ave

  6. Tartan Day on Ellis Island (Squads 1 & 2): Sunday, April 6 @ Time TBC; Ellis Island - Part of Statue of Liberty National Monument; Dancers may be excused from this performance on a case-by-case basis.

Squad 1

​

  • Aged 13 years* & over (on April 1st 2025)

  • Premier level dancer - with full kilt outfit

  • Video audition required

  • Must attend 2-3 rehearsals in Feb/March via Zoom

  • Attend in-person rehearsal on Friday, April 4 (AM)

  • Available to perform Friday, April 4 - Sunday, April 6

    • Arrive Thursday - Depart Sunday late afternoon/evening or Monday

  • Perform Fling Together choreography at performances

  • More complex parade choreography

  • FTDT members will be prioritized

Squad 2

​

  • Aged 13 years* & over (on April 1st 2025)

  • Any level welcome to apply

  • Application form only. Due to a large number of high quality applications, callback video auditions may be requested.

  • Attend an in-person rehearsal on Friday, April 4 (PM)

  • Available to perform Saturday AM - Sunday PM

  • Arrive Friday - Depart Sunday late afternoon/evening or Monday  

  • Perform traditional Highland or National dances at performances

  • Less complex parade choreography

Audition & Application Criteria​

Dancers may apply for either Squad 1 or Squad 2. If a dancer applies for Squad 1, and is not selected, they will also be considered for a spot on Squad 2/Squad 1 Reserve.

Squad 1 Audition Components: 

  1. Solo Choreography - 2 min max (must be recorded within the past 18 months)

  2. 4 Step Hornpipe - Steps:  1st Step (Circle with Polka), 13th Step (Inverted Toe Heel In 2nd Position), 11th Step (Low Cutting), 16th Step (High Cutting); Music: Hornpipe - Steps 4 Tempo 104

  3. Brush and Travel Step- Alternative method (5th Step Laddie); Music: dancer’s choice

Audition Instructions: 

  • Dancers may wear practice clothing for their audition. Please nothing too baggy that hinders your ability to dance or our ability to see your technique.

  • Choreography video may be pre-recorded.

  • Videos should be recorded in landscape orientation with dancer fully visible.

  • Upload your audition video(s) to YouTube as an unlisted video

  • Dancers may submit 1 link with all components in the same video or separate links for each part.

Squad 2 Application

Fill out the application. Dancers of all levels will be considered for spots on the squad. Due to a large number of high quality applications, callback video auditions may be requested.

 “One Team, Two Squads”

 

As part of the SoS/FT 2025 collaboration, FT is managing certain logistical components of the partnership including the application process and administration for the group of dancers previously referred to as “friends” (non SoS dancers invited by SoS to perform with them during Tartan Week). In 2024, FT auditioned and brought a team of dancers to increase the number of SoS “friends” who participated in the weekend. SoS also had their own group of “friends” in 2024. In an effort to unify and streamline the “friends” process, FT has combined the “friends” groups and created one team with two squads - both affiliated with FT and SoS collectively. The squads will require different levels of commitment and skill level to participate. 

Donations help us offset the costs of events and directly benefit our non-profit initiatives.
